What You’ll Experience
During Florida’s summer bioluminescence season, millions of microscopic organisms known as dinoflagellates create brilliant flashes of blue-green light whenever the water is disturbed.
As you paddle through the calm waters of the Indian River Lagoon, your kayak leaves glowing trails behind you. Fish swimming beneath the surface often appear as streaks of light, while each paddle stroke creates a magical display that feels almost unreal.
The Indian River Lagoon is widely recognized as one of the best places in the world to see bioluminescence, making this one of the most unique nighttime activities near Orlando.
While wildlife and bioluminescence are natural phenomena and can never be guaranteed, this location has consistently produced excellent viewing conditions throughout the summer season for many years.
Bioluminescent Swimming Area
Near the end of the tour, guests may access a shoreline area where bioluminescence is often visible along the water’s edge.
Many guests enjoy observing the glow from the shoreline or entering the water after the tour to experience the bioluminescence up close.
Please note that swimming is not part of the guided tour and is undertaken entirely at your own risk.
Can You Take Photos of Bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence is difficult to photograph because it requires very dark conditions and specialized camera settings. The best opportunities typically occur during new moon periods from July through September.
Most guests find that the experience is far more impressive in person than any photograph can capture.
What Should I Bring?
We recommend bringing:
Water bottle
Insect repellent
Towel
River sandals or water shoes
Swimsuit under comfortable clothing
Change of clothes for after the tour

10/10! This trip was awesome! We saw manatees just feet away from our kayak, caught and released comb jellies, our guide Ryan was full of information about the ecosystem and we saw a rocket on the pad all lit up at night. It was all 100% worth the drive, money and time. Perfect for a date night!

Wonderful experience! Hands down would recommend this activity! Jay, our lead tour guide is not only an expert kayak guide but an even better wildlife and nature enthusiast! He made this trip for me. His deep respect and love for nature was evident in all his teachings, especially while looking out for the well being of each animal encounter 💕 Baby manatee (and mom), alligator, screech owl 🦉, wood peckers, comb jellies etc! Callum, his teammate was very good as well. He clearly loves what he does and made sure everyone was having fun, he will make a great lead guide! Antwan was quite and somewhat shy but made sure we were all safe!

Oh my gosh - this was AMAZING! We caught the bioluminescence on a '5' night (rated 1-5), so we really got to see it well. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and informative, as well as friendly. We had eight family members in our party, so we took the raft. My only complaint, which is something that is inherent in using a raft, is that you have to sit on the edge facing in, then row and try to look over your shoulder to see the bioluminescence. For me, that got tiring, and my neck hurt after awhile. I wish we could have just sat on the seats in the raft. BUT - it was still wonderful. I would like to do it again, but in a kayak. A++++ adventure! We live in Kansas, but I can't wait to go do some other nature tours with BK Adventures again. Jordan, in the orange shirt was the 'captain' of some of the tours 🙂 Our ages were 6, 8, 11, 13, 40, 41, 42, 69. We did this after a day touring the Kennedy Space Center on July 21st, 2023.

The bioluminescent tour was absolutely fantastic! Initially, I thought it might be a bit scary, to be in the water after dark, but it was far from it. The experience was mesmerizing and awe-inspiring, with the glowing waters creating a magical atmosphere. We got to see a dolphin up close, It was truly a unique adventure that exceeded all my expectations. I will definitely do it again during august, since I was told the algae glows more during hot months. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable experience.
