1. What Is Bioluminescence?

real photo of bioluminescence dinoflagellates glowing in paddle stroke on BK Adventure tour in Florida

Glowing plankton in the Indian River Lagoon on a bioluminescent kayaking tour.

By definition bioluminescence is an living thing (bio) that creates it’s own light (luminescence).  There are many bioluminescent organisms around the world that include plants, fungi, insects, and aquatic life forms. In Florida we have several types of bioluminescence, but when you hear about a “bioluminescence tour” it is general thought to mean a tour to see glowing water or sea life in the Indian River Lagoon.

At BK Adventure’s Bioluminescence Tours, we specialize in showing our guests two kinds of bioluminescent organism that are abundant in Florida’s estuaries.  They are: bioluminescent comb jellies (ctenophores) and glowing plankton called dinoflagellates.

2. Why Florida Has Some of the Best Bioluminescence in the World

You many have heard that there are bioluminescent bays around the world in places like Puerto Rico, The Cayman Islands, Isla Mujeras in Mexico, Australia, and Thailand.  That is true and people have amazing experiences seeing the water glow in those places, but here is what makes Florida the best place in the world to see bioluminescence: 1) You can see bioluminescence year round because we have both comb jellies and dinoflagellates that shine nearly every night; 2) the summer bioluminescence in Florida is equally as bright to that which you will find in Vieques or Fajardo, Puerto Rico; and  3) if you live in the continental United States, you can see bioluminescence on a Florida road trip, instead of taking a flight.

3. Best Time to See Bioluminescence in Florida

Season  (months) – type of bio – visiblilty

Winter (Jan, Feb, Mar) – Comb Jellies – good

Spring (Apr, May) – Comb Jellies/Dino – good/minimal

Summer (Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep) – Dinoflagellates – EXCELLENT! (June will be good, but less bright)

Fall (Oct, Nov, Dec) – Comb Jellies – great (you may see good dino in October)

For a real time update of how the bright the bioluminescence is at every location we serve, see our weekly bioluminescence brightness updates here.

In Summer – Every Night is a Good Night to See Bioluminescence.

Many people like to book during the dark skies nights so there is not much light reflecting off the water and they only see the glow below.  Here are some suggested dates.

New Moon Notice

These are the Dark Skies weeks for Summer 2026:

May 15-24 (16 new Moon)

Jun 10-19 (14 new Moon)

Jul 10-19 (14 new Moon)

Aug 8-16 (12 new Moon)

Sep 5-14 (10 new Moon)

Can you see bioluminescence during a full moon? Most times, yes, the guides know where to find it every night, during any moon phase. However…

The less moonlight, the brighter the bioluminescent sea creatures will appear. Please check the Moon Calendar before booking.

Many people would love to see the bioluminescence in Florida, but do not feel comfortable in a kayak. That’s okay, at BK Adventure, we have many types of boats to help our guests with a variety of abilities.  Use this guide to help you chose the best way to see bioluminescence for you and your family.

6. What Nobody Tells You About Bioluminescence Tours

At BK Adventure, we have been hosting the world’s best bioluminescence tours for over a decade.  We put more people on the water for bioluminescent kayaking and rafting than any other company, and we are here to let you know everything you need to so you can have a great time.  So, here’s the truth about bioluminescence:

  1. The brightness of bioluminescence changes every day.  So, we created a daily bioluminescence update, so you can see the report from the night before.  It does not guarantee what you’ll see, but it’s a good indicator.
  2. Wind makes a difference.  Bioluminescence tends to concentrate in certain areas; winds can blow it away and make it dissipate, which makes the glow seem less bright.
  3. Fish happens! Sometimes fish, especially mullet, will  jump into your kayak.  If so, don’t panic, they won’t hurt you at all. Just gently get them out of your boat.
  4. It’s called the Mosquito Lagoon for good reason.  The world’s best bioluminescence happens on the Mosquito Lagoon and yes, there ARE mosquitoes, lots of them – guaranteed.  But our St. Augustine location has NONE! So, if you are 100% against the bugs, try the Sunset and Bioluminescence Tour in St. Augustine!
  5. Dolphins love the Glow! There is a good chance to see neon glowing dolphins at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
  6.  Comb jellies are underrated.  These glowing creatures, at 540 million years old, are some of the first life forms on earth. They are amazing to see with there turquoise blue light shining through the water. They do not sting, so you get a chance to touch the magic!
  7. Dinoflagellates look like sparkles on your arms! If you run your hand through the water, and let it flow down your arm, you will see it sparkle as it flows!
  8. You don’t need to go on the New Moon.  The idea that bioluminescence only glows during the new moon is a myth.  In fact, in summer, you will see good bioluminescent glow even on a full moon, so avoid the crowds and see the moon shine above and the bio shine below.
  9. Summer is NOT bioluminescence season.  Many people think there is only bioluminescence in Florida during the summer.   That is not true at all.  Because we have two kinds of aquatic bioluminescence (comb jellies and dinoflagellates) here, we see it all year round.

7. Is Bioluminescence Safe for Kids?

Family on bioluminescence tour in st. augustine

A bioluminescence tour can be a great adventure for kids.  At BK Adventure, we recommend the Family Rafting tour for children under 8 years old.  For 8 – 12, the tandem kayak tours are a fun choice – these are 2 person kayaks where a parent could sit behind and paddle themselves, or let the child help paddle too.  For older kids and teens, the Clear Kayaking Tour is a hit! This is our most viral tour, and the one that most influencers ask to go on.  The views from the bottom of the clear kayaks are amazing.  During comb jelly season, it looks like a galaxy of glowing stars going by!

Safety First

We require all guests to wear a life vest, and for children we have smaller sizes that should fit.  But if you are unsure, we recommend you bring your child’s personal life vest for best fit.  Our guides always do their best to ensure a safe, fun environment, and we ask that parents help by following all of our guidelines, and ensuring their children do too.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Is bioluminescence real?

Yes, it definitely is.  And it occurs in nature more than you think.  Most people are not out in the woods, or paddling around in a bioluminescent lagoon at night, so they do not know about the bioluminescent life that is around them all the time, but it’s very real.  Bioluminescence is usually a defense mechanism for the creatures that emit the glow.

Can you swim in bioluminescence?

Yes, you can and some people do.  However, on our tours, we recommend people stay in their boats and enjoy the water from there.

Can you see it after rain?

Yes, in fact, bioluminescence often appears to glow brighter after a rain storm.

What will the bio look like on your tour?

The photos used for bioluminescence must be taken in absolutely perfect condition.  Remember, bioluminescence is light created by living creatures.  Like anything in nature, it can be hard to capture.  Photos of bioluminescence are taken in perfect conditions at the height of the season.  Your tour may feature comb jellies, or plankton that are not as concentrated as the would be in mid- July to mid-September.  For more about seeing bioluminescence, read about it here.

Is Titusville or Cocoa Beach better?

Titusville is better for wildlife viewing and very dark skies.  Cocoa Beach is better for an easy access location that is not so remote.

Can you see bioluminescence near Orlando and Disney?

The nearest bioluminescence tours to Orlando are BK Adventure’s Cocoa Beach and Titusville locations.

What makes the St. Augustine bioluminescence tour so special?

This is the only bioluminescent kayaking tour with views of the historic city of St. Augustine.  You have the chance to get stunning photos of the ancient monuments, plus experience the magic of Florida bioluminescence! See the water glow at night and the city shining bright!

Our Lady of La Leche Great Cross View from River on bioluminescence tour in St. Augustine

What type of Florida wildlife will I see?

On this most of BK Adventure’s Sunset and Bioluminescence tours we  see manatees, dolphins, rays, roseate spoonbills, herons, pelicans, many types of fish (as they glow in the bioluminescence), comb jellies, and dinoflagellates.

What should I wear?

Wear quick dry sports clothes that are full sleeved, closed toed shoes (like old sneakers) or river sandals, and insect repellant.

What do I need to bring on this night kayaking tour?

We recommend a dry bag or something waterproof you can put your valuables in that has a carabiner or tie on,  a bottle of water., and insect repellant.

Are clear kayaks worth it?

Yes, many people think they are absolutely worth it.  They view of bioluminescence all around you in the glass-like boat is spectacular.  However, these kayaks are not the easiest to maneuver.  The tandem kayaks tour is also amazing, so it’s just preference.  If you are not comfortable kayaking, then do not do clear kayaks.

Where is the best place to see bioluminescence in Florida?

The Mosquito Lagoon is considered to have the best bioluminescence in the entire world! However, we think this bioluminescent kayaking experience in St. Augustine is the best tour overall because you not only get to see great bioluminescence, you also get magnificent nighttime views of the city! This is a truly unique bioluminescence tour that you will not find anywhere else.

Do I need to know how to kayak to do a bioluminescence tour?

No. We will give you some instruction before you go out, and paddling is easy for most people.

What should I wear for this tour?

Wear quick dry clothes, river sandals or water shoes (old sneakers are fine).  We do not recommend wearing bikinis or any loose clothing as this will be an uncomfortable paddling experience.

What do I do if it’s raining?

This tour departs in light rain.  If you are unsure, call our office and we will let you know if we think the weather will clear up.  If you would like, you can can request a raincheck before the departure of the tour, and book another time at no extra fee.

Is this tour suitable for children?

This is a great tour for kids 8+ as we use tandem kayaks and the child can sit up front and help an adult parent paddle.  For younger children, it would depend  – call out office if you have questions.  It is not suitable for children under 5 years old.  ( We would recommend out bioluminescent rafting tour.)

What is the best time to do a bioluminescence tour in St. Augustine?

Because Florida has both winter bioluminescence and summer bioluminescence, you can do a tour almost any time of the year.  BK Adventure posts bioluminescence brightness ratings on their website and social media daily, so check out @bkadventure on your favorite platform, or call us for an update at 407-519-8711.  The brightest bioluminescence is determined by the darkness of the skies and the warmth or coolness of the water.  Check out our Dark Skies – New Moon Calendar here.

FAQ

Our tours rarely cancel due to weather.  If it is raining the day of the tour, chances are, with Florida weather, it will clear up by the time your tour starts.  Sometimes we will hold the tour by 30 minutes for the weather to clear.  In the case of lightning, high winds, or some other reason that we cannot paddle, we will re-schedule all guests to the very next tour available, or at a convenient time for you.  Rainchecks are valid for 1 year.

We recommend you do the "Sunset Tour" if you have time.  That way you get to see dolphins, and possibly manatees and all the amazing birds.  Then, take a break, and go out for the Bioluminescent Kayak Tour later.  It's just $20 more and it's an amazing tour! Click here  to book that.

For our single kayaks, the weight limit is 275 lbs.  For the tandem kayaks it is 550 lbs. The night kayaking tours are done on tandem kayaks.

Some people are naturally athletic, and they pick up any kind of activity easily.  If that's you, pick either launch location.  If you are a beginner, or not sure about kayaking abilities, or have small children, you may want to choose the Haulover Canal kayaking location.  You may also want to ask about our new rafting options where you join others in the raft for an easy paddle in a big boat.

Ram, the owner, likes to say, "You bring the spray, we'll bring the mosquitos!" We cannot guarantee there will be mosquitos, but there is a 99% change there will be.  Some breezy nights have no mosquitoes. Some nights there are a lot.   The other pest is No-See-Ums.  The best way to keep them away is with Baby Oil.  So, consider slathering on a layer of Baby Oil to any exposed skin.  PLEASE BRING MOSQUITO SPRAY.

We can manage groups up to 50 people. We recommend you book weekend nights at least 45 days in advance for large groups.  Weekdays is best, as those are easier to find spaces for.  Please phone us for details, and we will be happy to get you and ALL your wonderful friends out for the tour!  See more about See more about Group Tours.

We like to think so, but we cannot guarantee it.  Here are the best conditions: hot weather, right after a rain storm, dark night.  Sometimes the night is dark even when the moon is supposed to be bright.  Sometimes a barely visible moon occurs on such a clear night, that even the slightest shine makes it seem bright.  So, there are many factors that make the bioluminescence more/less visible.

The BEST TIME for glowing algae (dinoflagellates) brightness is usually July to October.  But we see it all year round, and in November, we see amazing flashing comb jellies!  So, don't miss out because your vacation does not fall during the summer months.

This depends on your launch site: either Kelly Park is near Port Canaveral right off of Hwy. 528 (about 45 mins from Orlando), or in peak-season also, Haulover Canal in Titusville, Florida (1 hr; 15 mins from Orlando).  Kelly Park near Cocoa Beach is the closer launch site to Miami.

Lots of people who love kayaking with their dog have asked about this tour. We do not recommend this one for dogs, as it is a night kayaking tour. Maybe chose the manatee tour or the monkey tour instead of bioluminescent kayaking if you want to have a great experience with your favorite pooch!

Our recommended age for paddling is 5+ years old.  Each tandem kayak, has a small middle seat, that a younger child could sit in.  Price is per person regardless of age, or number in kayak.   We recommend only for small children who are able to sit still for at least 90 minutes.

Because of wildlife and environmental protection we have a limited number of kayaks we can launch at one time.  So, we use 2 person tandem kayaks in order to get all of our guests out to see the bioluminescence on the dates they want.  That does not mean you will be in a large group.  Only 8 boats go out with 2 guide boats at one time.

BK Adventure's office is about 50 miles from Orlando, and just 15 minutes away from Kennedy Space Center.  Guest will meet at our Titusville office and then be driven to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge (about 10 miles away).

Because of the limited availability of our equipment, they tend to book up quickly.  Please call us if there is a time/day you would like that is not available for online booking.  We may be able to get you on.

This kayaking tour is not recommended for smaller children.  10+ is a good age for this tour.

Though we do not guarantee wildlife on any of our tours (Mother Nature makes no guarantees!), we usually see alligators, ospreys, herons, river otters and deer on this tour.

We can manage groups up to 15 people for this tour. We recommend you book weekends at least 45 days in advance for large groups.  Weekdays is best, as those are easier to find spaces for.  Please phone us for details, and we will be happy to get you and ALL your wonderful friends out for the tour! See more about Group Tours here.

Some people are naturally athletic, and they pick up any kind of activity easily.  If that's you, pick either launch location.  If you are a beginner, or not sure about kayaking abilities, let your guide know when at the beginning of the tour.

Because of wildlife and environmental protection we have a limited number of boats we can launch at one time.  There will be 6-10 people in your raft depending on the size of the boat.

This tour is better for small children. We recommend only for small children who are able to sit still for at least 90 minutes.  Please bring USCG issued life vest for toddlers to be sure it is a good fit.  We do have child size life vests available for 3+.

We can manage groups up to 22 people for rafting. We have 3 rafts to accommodate this. We recommend you book weekend nights at least 45 days in advance for large groups.  Weekdays is best, as those are easier to find spaces for.  Please phone us for details, and we will be happy to get you and ALL your wonderful friends out for the tour! See more about our Group Tours here.

The weight limit for 1 raft is about 2400lbs.  We can accommodate people of varying sizes in our rafts.  Be sure you can get in and out of the raft on your own.

Because of the limited availability of our rafts and clear kayaks, they tend to book up quickly.  Please call us (407-519-8711) if there is a time/day you would like that is not available for online booking.  We may be able to get you on.  But, generally for bioluminescence tours it is best to book 30 days in advance for New Moon and Dark Skies weeks, and about 2 weeks in advance for all other tours.  This will help ensure you get the time and tour that you want.

Yes, especially in the summer months, bioluminescence is visible during the full moon.  But on the buffer seasons like spring or early fall, it may be hard to see bioluminescent plankton (dinoflagellates).  However, the comb jellies are usually visible during all moon phases. The less light that reflects on the water usually makes the bioluminescence appear brighter, but it is always still there.
