Bioluminescence experience
What You’ll Experience
During Florida’s summer bioluminescence season, millions of microscopic organisms known as dinoflagellates create brilliant flashes of blue-green light whenever the water is disturbed.
As you paddle through the calm waters of the Indian River Lagoon, your kayak leaves glowing trails behind you. Fish swimming beneath the surface often appear as streaks of light, while each paddle stroke creates a magical display that feels almost unreal.
The Indian River Lagoon is widely recognized as one of the best places in the world to see bioluminescence, making this one of the most unique nighttime activities near Orlando.
While wildlife and bioluminescence are natural phenomena and can never be guaranteed, this location has consistently produced excellent viewing conditions throughout the summer season for many years.
Bioluminescent Swimming Area
Near the end of the tour, guests may access a shoreline area where bioluminescence is often visible along the water’s edge.
Many guests enjoy observing the glow from the shoreline or entering the water after the tour to experience the bioluminescence up close.
Please note that swimming is not part of the guided tour and is undertaken entirely at your own risk.
Can You Take Photos of Bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence is difficult to photograph because it requires very dark conditions and specialized camera settings. The best opportunities typically occur during new moon periods from July through September.
Most guests find that the experience is far more impressive in person than any photograph can capture.
What Should I Bring?
We recommend bringing:
-
Water bottle
-

Had a terrific kayak adventure with BK. We did the sunset trip followed by bioluminescence in mid October. We happened to be there on a very chilly day, which was unexpected, but we all made the best of it! We saw a lot of gorgeous birds, manatees, and even dolphins. Magical!
There is still bioluminescence in mid-October, but it’s not as plentiful and bright as what you see mid-summer.
The BK team were well-prepared and all of our equipment and boats were in great condition. The kayaks are for two people, so if you come with an uneven number in your party, someone will get paired up with a stranger.
There are porta potties at the drop-in location. You can go before you get on the boat, and with the double tours there was a snack and bio-break in the middle.
Our family group included one adult (admittedly in not great shape, lol) one senior citizen, and three teenagers and all of us were able to manage the exertion of paddling around for three hours.
If you have little children with you, and they are afraid of the dark, the night time tour would not be a good choice. There were some parts of the tour that were in incredibly dark areas of the water.
I’d love to come back in the summer and see the bioluminescence when it’s at its peak. Thanks BK for an enjoyable evening!
